A product of Jesuit education (Regis High School in New York City), Steve was a John Jay Scholar at Columbia University where he graduated number two in his class of 1979. Columbia awarded Steve a Kellett Fellowship to study at Cambridge University for what turned out to be two of the most decisive years in recent British history (1979–1981). He subsequently earned an M.Phil. in history and philosophy of science, which he followed up with a Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Andrew Mellon Fellow. He was awarded a D.Litt. by the University of Warwick in 2007 for sustained lifelong contributions to scholarship. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the UK Academy of Social Sciences, and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Steve is best known for his foundational work in the field of ‘social epistemology’, which is the name of the quarterly journal
