A sensitive method for the determination of norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine in equine and bovine plasmas is described. The appearance of endogenous compounds particular to equine and bovine plasmas interfere with the published assay methods and require modification of the chromatographic conditions. An in situ ion-pair formation with the compound 3,4-hydroxybenzylamine requires the use of isoproterenol as an internal standard. The extraction procedure which involves the adsorption of the catecholamines by alumina was modified to give 70%-80% recoveries for most compounds. The electrochemical detection of these compounds approaches a detection limit of 40 pg/ml for all but dopamine in bovine plasma which was much higher (250 pg/ml) due to poor extraction. Catecholamine values for various selected bull, cow and horse samples are presented.
