U.S.A. ROBERT RAM F. F. THOMAS E. MALCOLM AND Departmentsof Ophthalmology, Physiology, and Biophysics, Washgt University School of Medice, St. Louis, Missouri 631IO; and Department of Psychology, QueensCollege, Flushg, New York 1I367 SUMMARY AND CCLUSIS I. tracellular recordgs were obtaed from amacre and ngli cells the perfused reta-eyecup preparati of the mudpuppy. y-Amobutyric acid () and () were added to the bathg medium and the / antagists strychne (Strych), picrotox (Picro), and bicuculle methiodide (BCC) were also applied. 2. / caused a large decrease put resistance (IR) both amacre and ngli cells. The decreased IR was often more than 100 MQ and cstituted a large fracti of the put resistance of the cell. 3. The /-mediated change IR was not associated with a shift membrane potential amacres, but caused a hyperpolarizati ngli cells. 4. / acti amacre and ngli cells was verted to a depolarizati by tracellular jectis of Cl- usg KCl-filled micropipettes. This suggests that chloride is volved mediatg / acti both amacre and ngli cells. 5. A comparis of selective versus sensitivity of ngli cells showed a small populati of cells that were exclusively sensitive .and a small populati of off cells that were exclusively sensitive.
