THE COURSE OF MANIC‐DEPRESSIVE PSYCHOSIS A follow up investigation of 215 patients A follow u p investigation of 215 patients OLEBRATFOS JOHN OTTO AND HAUO INTRODUCTION According to Kraepelin ( 1913) manic-depressive psychosis, contrary to dementia praecox, is usually characterized by a good prognosis. Only r w l y does the disease become chronic. I n Kraepelin’s material as much as 60-70 per cent of the patients had one attack only and very few had more than four attacks. Mean duration o the separate periods of illness was 7 months, but f the range varied considerably and in some cases the attacks lasted for several years. Later investigations have in the main borne out Kraepelin’s findings. Certain objections may, however, be raised against the methods employed in most of the reported prognostic studies. A current procedure has been to assess number and duration of previous attacks for patients admitted to a mental hospital. The course of the illness after discharge has been accorded less attention and personal follow up examinations by interview have been few. Common to most authors is that they have tried to cover several decades of the patients’ life history.
