Only r w l y does the disease become chronic. I n Kraepelinâs material as much as 60-70 per cent of the patients had one attack only and very few had more than four attacks. Mean duration o the separate periods of illness was 7 months, but f the range varied considerably and in some cases the attacks lasted for several years. A current procedure has been to assess number and duration of previous attacks for patients admitted to a mental hospital. The course of the illness after discharge has been accorded less attention and personal follow up examinations by interview have been few. Common to most authors is that they have tried to cover several decades of the patientsâ life history.
