^ This study was conducted m the program of the Organizabon Research Group of the Institute for Research m Social Science at the University of North Carolina The ORG is supported jointly by the Ford Foundation and the office of Naval Research [Nonr-855(04)] It was also submitted to the Department of Psychology in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Surveillance and trust causality, suggest that this causal attribution process is central to persons' evaluations of one another In another experiment (7), Thibaut and Riecken demonstrated that the individual's perception of the causal locus of another's behavior (whether the "cause" of the observed behavior was perceived as "internal" to or "external" to this other person) was a ftmction of the individual's perception of the other's status vis-a-vis himself They also showed that the individual's acceptance of the other person was a function of the perception of causal locus These studies had a common methodological characteristic an interaction situation was contrived whereby it was possible to assess the ways in which the S's perceptions of other attributes varied as a function of his perception of causality for the events occurring in the sittiation The
