The work reported herein was supported under NIH Grant #DEo1697 Ti article is based upon a paper entitled âThe Use of Information About Articulation and Nasality hs for Recommendations Regarding Treatment,â delivered at the 1969 International Congress on Clefc Palate, April 14-17, Houston, Texas. 26 SPEECH PROBLEMS I N P A T I E N T S W I T H CLEFT PALATE possible. While mental retardation is probably not of special significance in a cleft-palate population (Goodstein, I ~ I ) , there are deviations, they may play when a substantial role in slowing down speech learning. Loss of hearing is also of major interest (Graham, 1962; Masters et al., 1960; Spriestersbach, 1962). Current evidence (Paradise) suggests that middle ear fluid of a serous type is routinely present in the ears of infants and children up to at least age two or until the palate is repaired. While the extent to which hearing may be impaired during this crucial developmental period is yet to be determined, the early assessment of ear disease, careful otological treatment, and frequent hearing evaluations are important in the management and prevention of speech problems. Since children learn speech by listening to it,
