An optimum interpolation scheme is applied to the analysis of daily maximum and minimum temperature on a western Mediterranean island with complex orography. The autocorrelation function and the first‒guess (or background) have been interpolated, at the analysis points and for every day of the year, as a function of geographical parameters, between which great importance has been placed on the distance from the sea. The data used came from about 40 stations and covered 30 years from 1951 to 1980. Fifteen more independent stations, with about 20 years of data, were used for the verification of the analysis. ©1997 Royal Meteorological Society.
