Am. J. Physiol. 254 (Endocrinol. Metab. 17): E71-E78,1988.Serious ctradictis exist at present in our understanding the physiological the synthesis the metal-binding protein, (MT). In addressing this problem, we have examined in vivo the liver and serum MT levels in the under a spectrum experimental cditis. The experiments cfirm that stress has a major positive effect hepatic MT levels. It was found that adrenocorticotropic horme (ACTH) administi has an inhibitory effect hepatic MT levels in respse to restraint stress and that adrenalectomy (ADX) leads to an increase in MT levels and in MT levels in respse to acute and chric immobilizati stress. Similar results followed treatment with the glucocorticoid receptor blocker, RU 486. The effect ADX was abolished by corticostere replacement. The relatis found amg hepatic MT, serum MT, and glucocorticoid ccentis indicate that in some circumstances have a permissive in mobilizing MT from tissues to serum and that in physiological cditis corticostere has an inhibitory in the maintenance hepatic MT levels. adrenocorticotropic horme; aldostere; RU 486 adrenalectomy; corticostere; in physiologrcal cditis is at present unclear. First, whereas some natural appear to be, like dexamethase, MT inducers in vitro (30), the administi cortisol to hamsters (32) and that corticostere
