Isolation of pike fry rhabdovirus from Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel) W. AHNE & I. THOMSEN Institute of Zoology and Hydrobiology, University of Munich, Federal Republic of Germany Thepikefry rhabdovirus (PFR) which causes an acute disease of pike fry, Esox lucius L., (de Kinkelin, Galimard & Bootsma 1973) has also been isolated from: grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes) (Ahne 1975); tench. Tinea tinea L.; and white bream, Blicca bjoerkna (L.) (Ahne, Mahnel & Steinhagen 1982). This paper describes the isolation of PFR from Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel), an ornamental fish native to East Asia. This fish was introduced in Europe by accident together with the Chinese grass carp in 1960. The gudgeon is now widespread in the wild in Europe and it is, to some extent, popular in fish farms. Pseudorasbora of about 1-5 g were examined for diseases using routine diagnostic procedures. The fish examined did not show any signs of disease. For virological investigations, pools of kidney, liver and spleen tissue were homogenized, diluted 1:10 in PBS, centrifuged (3000 g for 20 min) and the filtered (300 nm membrane filter) supernatant was inoculated on to fathead minnow (FHM) cells.
