THE RELATIVE QUALITY OF ECONOMICS JOURNALS: A SUGGESTED RATING SYSTEM I. The proposed formal system for estimating the quality of economics journals builds upon the assumption that the quality of a journal is closely related to the overall professional accomplishments of its contributors and that such accomplishments, in turn, are closely related to the quality of the contributors' institutional affiliations. Boldly stated, outstanding journals have a relatively large proportion of contributors from the faculties of outstanding universities. A measure of the quality of economics departments is available from the latest American Council on Education (ACE) evaluation of Ph.D.granting departments.
