The nature of natural history. (Republication of 1950 edition with a new preface by H.S. Horn). Princeton University Press, Princeton: 1990. Pp x, 321. Price: US$ 12.95. ISBN: 0-691-02446-4. This is a reissue, with a new introduction and additional bibliography, of a book which appeared in 1950. It is a charming and well-written work by an American mandarin with an appreciation of history. His objective was to defend the idea of natural history as a serious branch of scientific inquiry at a time when laboratory science seemed to be carrying all before it. For him, natural history concentrates upon the individual organism; and he wrote the book to try to convert lovers of nature into natural historians, understanding what they were seeing. One chapter is devoted to the natural history of naturalists to make this point. He describes, in an accessible way, how naturalists go about the naming and study of animals and plants; when written, the book's examples were up to date, but clearly that is no longer the case.
