Introduction In the study of work relationships, the concept of congruency or ‘fit’ has played a major role in the further understanding of this expanding field. Congruency denotes a harmonious relationship between the individual and his or her environment, the extent to which the individual is fitted to the environment and vice versa, and a reciprocal complementary relationship between an individual and the environment (Lofquist and Dawis, 1969; p. 45). Holland (1985) has also contributed largely to the elaboration of the meaning of the congruency concept. In his view, different personality types require different environments. For instance, enterprising types flourish in enterprising environments because such environments provide the outlets and reinforcement the enterprising type needs. Empirical investigations of congruency have been carried out in several areas such as: self esteem (Korman, 1976), career development (Schein, 1978), and organization design (Tosi and Slocum, 1984).
