Summary The beneficial effect of adenine on red cells of blood stored in A.C.D. at 4°C, has been confirmed by post‐transfusion survival studies in rabbits and by biochemical studies of human and rabbit blood. Nevertheless probably this effect of adenine is too unreliable for routine use in the storage of blood for transfusion. In human red cells adenine has a greater effect on intracellular A.T.P. levels than on overall glycolytic rates. This suggests that loss of A.T.P. is not the only factor leading to the failure of red‐cell metabolism during storage.
