Preface Agroforestry Systems 51: iii­iv, 2001. © 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Printed in the Netherlands. The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE), with headquarters in Turrialba, Costa Rica, produced its first MSc thesis in agroforestry (or, what would later come to be known by that name) in 1954 (Pérez CA, Estudio forestal del laurel Cordia alliodora en Costa Rica). In 1977, an Agroforestry Section was established in CATIE under its Department of Natural Renewable Resources and agroforestry research at CATIE has increased steadily since then. For example, in 1999, a special edition of CATIE's regional scientific journal `Agroforestry in the Americas' included 21 articles, reporting new agroforestry research, co-authored by CATIE students (including exchange students) and staff. However, CATIE's work is seldom known outside Latin America. Increasing efforts are now being made to change this situation and disseminate CATIE's results globally. One initiative in that direction is this issue of Agroforestry Systems, which contains nine original articles based on CATIE studies during the 1990s. These nine studies were selected from a total of 16 through an internal review process, followed by the normal peer review process of the journal.
