Destructive periodontal diseases may be thought of as a series of infections that affect individual or multiple periodontal sites within the oral cavity. These infections have a number of properties that make them difficult to study (as discussed below), not the least of which is the fact that flare-ups may be caused by a series of different microbial species and take place at various affected local sites at irregular time intervals. This chapter 1) summarizes some of the difficulties encountered in seeking etiological agents of destructive periodontal diseases, 2) indicates the currently suspected periodontal pathogens, 3) examines the risk of periodontal attachment loss associated with the presence of specific bacterial species, 4) examines http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Periodontology 2000 Wiley
