Actually, one can argue that different aspects of supply chain management, such as inventory control, forecasting, transportation logistics, distribution, and procurement, have always been topics of research in the production and operations managementcommunity, and our journals have published article after article on these topics. So what is the difference now? In the last five years, we have witnessed tremendous excitement and top management attention on the subject of supply chain management in industry. It seemsthat the distinction between the so-called supply chain managementtoday and traditional operations managementlies in two dimensions of integration and coordination: organizational integration and flow coordination. To start with, a supply chain is a network of entities that starts with the suppliers’ suppliers and ends with the customers’ customers for the production and delivery of goods and services.
