KAWASAKI, KAZUHIRO ABE, AND thelium-dependent relaxatn is markedly reduced. regard to -dependent relaxatn diabetic animals, conflictg results have been reported. Several studies have demonstrated an impaired dependent relaxatn aorta from streptozotoc-duced diabetic rats (16, 25, 26) and aorta from spontaneously diabetic Brattleboro rats (7, 23). However, other studies usg alloxan-duced diabetic rabbit aorta (12) or streptozotoc-duced diabetic rat aorta (12, 35) have shown that -dependent relaxatn did not differ between control and diabetic vessels. Moreover, White and Carrier (36) have observed an enhanced -dependent relaxatn of mesenteric artery streptozotoc-duced diabetic rats. Those studies have maly examed the extent of -dependent relaxatn isolated vessels obtaed from diabetic animals but did not refer to its timedependent change. We noticed that the dependent relaxant responses diabetic vessels were more transient compared with those control vessels. Oxygen-derived free radicals, especially superoxide anns, are known to facilitate the rapid activatn of EDRF (24, 29). Thus, to determe whether oxygenderived free radicals play a role this more transient -dependent relaxatn diabetic vessels, we examed the effects of varus scavengers of oxygenderived free radicals on the time course of changes -dependent relaxatn diabetic aorta.
