Abstract
The majority of studies examining small business success and failure invariably fail to distinguish between the symptoms and the causes of under performance and ultimate enterprise failure. The management process in the smaller enterprise is seldom a readily visible one. It often has an abstract rather than concrete form. There is a need for an appreciation of the nature of small business management which reaches far beyond traditional management understanding. Entrepreneurship is portrayed as an economic necessity in a modern economy, yet the actions and behaviour of many entrepreneurs often result in business collapse.
