Ja Rio de Janeira, Universidade Federal do Rio 1T HAS BEEN many years since Mayer, working with scyphomedus,a (25, 26), es (27), using tortoise heart, demonstrated that ring-shaped preparations of excitable tissue can be made to transport waves of excitation cyclically around the ring for long preparations properiods of time. These vided the opportunity to exae several of the ionic characteristics of the environment essential to excitation conduction, We are attempting to use a similar approach in studies of the propagation of the spreading depression wave of Leso. Spreading depression of electrical activity (), first described in the cerebral cortex bv Leso (15), has been observed in other central nervous system structures as well as in the retina. Starting from the initial findings of Gouras (6), we have developed various preparations of retina in vitro in which with all essential characteristics of the cerebral cortex reaction can be regularly evoked (19). Since then, using fn-st amphibian later retinas of chicks, we have studied various concomitant phenomena accompanying , such as slow voltage variations, impedance changes, mechanical deformations, light-scattering changes (for a review
