The first convincingl y successful quantum exchange took place a few weeks ago . After a short historical revie w of quantum cryptography, we report on the apparatus designed by Charles H . Bennett an d built by him at the IBM T . J . Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY, with the help of John Smolin . Our preliminary results follow . Quantum cryptography was born in the late sixties when Stephen Wiesner wrote "Conjugate Coding " . Unfortunately, this highly innovative paper was unpublished at the time and it went mostly unnoticed .
