The marginalisation of 'race' and ethnicity has impoverished both the mainstream literature in the sociology of health and particularly research on 'race* and health. The latter remains dominated by epidemiologists with a heavy concentration on quantitative methods and simplistic conceptions of ethnicity, culture and racism (Sheldon and Parker, 1992). Among the areas highlighted as problematic in the research literature, are 'special needs' and communication difficulties.
