Abstract

1IntroductionApplied linguistics, as other disciplinary fields, is institutionally organized at a regional, national and international level, thanks to a network of national associations connected to the supra-national institution of AILA (‘Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée/International Association of Applied Linguistics’). These associations have a particular role in the specific discipline of applied linguistics, since they often aim at connecting not only scholars among themselves but also researchers and practitioners. Moreover, these associations also play an important role in promoting topics of study, and in defining the boundaries of the discipline. This paper reflects on the situation of applied linguistics in Switzerland, through a brief history on the current state of its national association.VALS-ASLA (in its full name: ‚Vereinigung für Angewandte Linguistik in der Schweiz – Association de Linguistique Appliquée – Associazione Svizzera di Linguistica Applicata – Associaziun Svizra da Linguistica Applitgada’) is the Swiss Association for Applied Linguistics. The field of applied linguistics has been quite fluid and evolving in Switzerland, as the following section will show, but the association’s aim has remained constant: it is and has always been to link linguistic research and linguistic ‘real world problems’, and between linguists and practitioners.
