Rh£s mit Recht angenommen, Lectures* 103, und es ist seither diese Annahme auch des öfteren wiederholt worden, so von H. Schuchardt, Ztschr. f. rom. Phil. IV, 123, von W. Stokes, Ztschr. vgl. Spracht. XXVm, 77, aus dessen Darstellung nicht ganz klar ist, ob er das ei als neuentstanden aus e oder als unmittelbare Fortsetzung des idg. ei, das im Irischen und Gallischen zu e geworden ist, betrachtet. J. Loth, der von dem Wandel von urbritt. e zu wy in seiner Chrestomathie S. 61 und Les mots latins dans les langues britt. S. 109 handelt, spricht sich, so viel ich sehe, nicht über die Zwischenformen aus. Es ist nun nicht unwichtig, dass wir einige mittelbare Zeugnisse für ei besitzen, und ich glaube um so mehr darauf hinweisen zu dürfen, weil die betreffenden Wörter zu falschen Schlüssen Veranlassung gegeben haben. Kymr. magwyr etc. entlehnt aus maceria. Loth setzt ohne weiteres maceria an, allein das Wort lautet macfria, wie lateinische Dichterstellen und das afr. maisiere zeigen, aus maceria wäre im Französischen maisire entstanden.
