Miszelle The Meaning of Q 17,37: Problems, Opinions and Perspectives Gertraud Harb (Inst. für Neutestamentliche Bibelwissenschaft, Heinrichstr. 78, A-8010 Graz) Over the years, exegetes have proposed many different interpretations in efforts to clarify the apparent saying about eagles in Matt 24,28 par Lk 17,37: âWherever the corpse is, there the vultures ( εÏο ) will gather.â Stephen Bridge, for example, notes 20 different options to interpret this one verse.1 The context of this saying raises several questions: How did Matthew, or perhaps even more difficult, how did Luke understand the saying? What does the saying mean in the context of Luke and Lucan redaction? Can the sayingâs original location in Q be determined? Nevertheless, the main focus of this article is why the term eagles ( εÏο ), rather than vultures (γ Ïε«), is used for birds gathering around a corpse. My explanation of the usage of εÏο and the possible meanings of the saying in Q proceeds in three steps: first, an examination of Graeco-Roman understandings of eagles and vultures; second, a survey of relevant material from the Hebrew Bible and its Greek versions; and third, an evaluation of alternative interpretations of the proverb in its original
