From the perspective of Reformed dogmatics In the phrase "the assurance of faith," one is confronted not only with issues concerning the truth of the Christian faith, but also, and more important, with one's own involvement in what is believed and hoped for. It raises the question of whether we are on solid ground, whether we can achieve certainty about the origin, destination and meaning of life. As humans, do we feel secure with God and his salvation in the midst of life and its mysteries, delight and trembling, estrangement and fulfillment, perplexity and guilt? According to Herman Bavinck, theology would not be worth its salt if it failed to point the way here, amidst "the appalling reality of life," with a concern for mankind's hunger for wholeness and salvation.1 The relation between salvation and one's own involvement in that salvation is already to be found in the apostle Paul in Romans 8:38, where he raises the theme of the assurance of faith with regard to Christ's triumph over the principalities and powers.
