Büttner, Hannover Preface In May 1990 a Symposium on Reference Methods and Reference Materials in Clinical Chemistry was held äs part of the Congress Biochemische Analytik 90 in Munich. The goal of this Symposium was to present an overview of the field of reference methodology. Reference methods and reference materials are of great importance for modern clinical chemistry because appropriate accuracy and measurement compatibility can be established only by means of a comprehensive coherent measurement System which is based on reference methods and reference materials. The Editors of this Journal therefore decided to publish the lectures of the Munich Symposium. A similar Symposium was held in 1986 but was published in the form of abstracts only1.
