The paper addresses itself to the study of the sociological correlates of speech behavior among b i l i n g u a l speakers of French and Creole in H a i t i . Comparisons are drawn with the diglossia situation in Paraguay. One discusses the factors influencing language loyalty and language maintenance, the social constraints of language choice» the social context of communicative development as well as the competence of H a i t i a n s i n Creole and French. THE COMMUNITY L I N G U I S T I C REPERTOIRE The most characteristic feature of the l i n g u i s t i c s i t u a t i o n in H a i t i is the diglossia demonstrated by the e l i t e of the country. According ,to FERGUSON'S definition (1959), the term "diglossia 11 is applicable to every situation where two languages coexist» one being a standard language used in formal communication» the other» considered as less important» used in more intimate situations.
