Reports The Legon Seminar on Writing and Production of literature for Children, April 5-10,1976 by S.I.A. Kotei Acting Head, Department of Library and Archival Studies, University of Ghana, Legon. (organiser of t he seminar) and Colin Ray Chairman, Sub-Section on Library Work with Children, International Federation of Library Associations. The decision to mount this Seminar was conceived over a long period of time and was made possible by a series of fortunate circumstances, including generous financial support from UNESCO, the Ghana Authorship Development Fund and the Arts Council of Ghana. In February 1968 the first important conference on book development in Africa was organised in Accra by UNESCO and attended by delegates from 23 African countries assisted by a generous selection of experts, consultants and representatives of overseas publishing houses and allied organisations. The organiser of the Legon Seminar was present and took part in all subsequent book meetings mentioned in this report. A number of critical issues were raised at the Accra conference· including the fact that although Africa accounts for a tenth of world population the continent produces only 1.5% of world literature.
