INTRODUCTION The objective of this study is to examine a group of non-verbal signals of folk culture, some sets of property signs. By approximating intra-family property signs using the general sign theory approach, by placing the signal nature of these signs in a focal point and showing the manner in which these signs are part of a system, and a subsequent concrete analysis of them, the author is able to raise questions which, in the opinion of the author, are unavoidable in ethnosemiotic research from a theoretical and practical, the principal and methodological point of view. Before beginning concrete analysis of intra-family property signs I consider it necessary to define the concept of the property sign itself. In order to do this, in addition to ethnological and ethnographic facts and experience, the theses of the signal sciences also have to be taken into consideration. In examining the application and function of the signs indicating ownership in folk culture,.we can define the concept of the property sign as follows: by property sign we mean the signs created by the individual or community using various technical methods which can be emotionally conceived, and are socially recognized as signals.
