Botanica Marina Vol. XIV, p, 22--23,1971 Patil and Joshi: Photosynthetic Studie« in U/va lätfuca* Ethanol Insolubie Fraction B, A, PATIL and G. V. JOSHI Department of Botany, Shivaß University, Kolhapur^ India (Received 14. 8. 1970) Introduction In the study of photosynthesis, insolubie fraction is äs important äs the soluble one, eventhough the lattet is not frequently investigated. In marine algae the study of insolubie fraction is of special importance äs these plants are known to synthesise a wide variety of insolubie compounds. Several investigators (PLANT and JOHNSON, 1941; BRADING etal^ 1954 and McKiNNEL andPERCiVAL, 1962) analysed the polysaccharide of Ulva lactuca and found to contain xylose, glucose, rhamnose and glucuronic acid. MEEUSE and KREGER (1959) have reported that starch in Ulva is of a different type than that found in higher plants. BIDWELL and Coworkers (1957 and 1958) have studied the photosynthesis in marine algae and observed some similarity in the distribution of protein amino acids though the soluble products were different LEWIS and GONZALVES (1962) have studied proteins, peptides and free amino acids of U. lactuca. In the earlier investigation (PATIL and JOSHI 1970) the results of path of carbon in the soluble compounds in U. lactuca
