Launched in 1970, the Writers of Wales series has published some ninety plus volumes devoted to the work of individual writers (e. g., Emlyn Williams, Kate Roberts, John Cowper Powys), and scholars (e. g., T. H. ParryWilliams, John Morris-Jones), as well as to studies of related medieval texts (for example, the work of the Cynfeirdd and Gogynfeirdd and the narrative tales comprising the Mabinogi). In each case the material had an internal co- Besprechungen und Anzeigen herence which helped to define and organize the focus. With this volume, O. J. Padel faced the difficulty of bringing together complex and disparate material covering a range of genres, dates, and provenance; indeed, in these texts Arthur is mostly peripheral or limited to episodes in narratives devoted to other figures. In many instances Arthur is but briefly invoked as a standard of heroic reference. Padel's cross-referencing of texts helps to provide cohesion to this eclectic material.
