Mammalian myrmecophagy : foraging, feeding and food preference
INTRODUCTION The ecology and behavior of most species of rodents inhabiting the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil are poorly known, despite the high diversity and endemism of this fauna (Fonseca and Kierulf 1989). In fact, any researcher who Mammalia, t. 55, n° 4, 1991. intends to work on this group has yet to rely on the observations made by Davis (1945, 1947) at the mountains of Rio de Janeiro. The only recent published works on the subject are Carvalho (1965), Fonseca and Kierulff (1989) and Stallings (1989), although there are some miscellaneous informations in general papers like Alho (1982). During the course of a project on the effects of a bamboo mast-seeding on the populations of granivorous birds and rodents (Olmos, in prep.) I was able to gather a considerable amount of basic ecological data on several species of Atlantic forest rodents. Due to the apparent lack of effects of the mast-seeding on the local rodent populations my data are an insight on the life history of these species and can be compared to the scanty published information. STUDY AREA My work was conducted near the headquarters of Fazenda Intervales (24°ITS, 48°32'W), a state reserve on the Serra
