PoweU - Dekalb The dimensions of the ziqqurrat in Babylon are described in a remarkable text, of which we possess a copy made in Uruk from a Borsippa antigraph on Dec. 12, 229 BC, the so-called Esagila Tablet. This is a key docnment for Babylonian metrology, because it 1) describes in metrological terms a monument that has been explored and carefully measured, 2) links the Standard System of mensuration with the Kassite System, 3) makes it possible to identify the Standard cubit with the NB cubit, 4) specifies the KassiteEarly NB ammatu rabitu äs 1.5 Standard cubits, and 5) enables us to calculate the absolute length of these units äs well äs the area of the iku used in both Sumerian-OB and in Kassite-Early NB documents. First described by G. Smith,1 it then disappeared, was rediscovered and published by V. Scheu,2 and finally reedited by F. Thureau-Dangin.3 A number of important studies4 have been devoted to this docnment that describes one of the wonders of the ancient world.
