Left-Handed Women have Earlier Age of Menopause

Left-Handed Women have Earlier Age of Menopause Association between handedness and age of menopause was assessed. A significant difference in the mean age of menopause was found between left-handed and right-handed women. There was a significant correlation between age at menopause and hand preference in right-handed women. These findings suggest that earlier age of menopause in left-handed women may be due to a more active and effective immune system in left-handers. KEY WORDS age of menopause, hand preference, left-handedness INTRODUCTION Leidy /I/ found that mean age at menopause was earlier in lefthanded women (mean 42.3 yr) than in right-handed women (mean 47.3 yr). However, Pavia et al. Ill found no clear relationship between age at menopause and hand preference. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether handedness and reproductive variables were influenced by the intrauterine endocrine environment in a larger cohort. ©Freund Publishing House Ltd., 1999 Vol. 10, No. 2, 1999 Earlier Menopause in Left-Handed Women SUBJECTS AND METHODS Four hundred and three women, aged 35-75, who had experienced a natural menopause after age 34 (an arbitrary cut-off point) at least one year before interview, were selected.
