Abstract

Kant's Transcendental Deduction of God's Existence äs a Postulate of Pure Practical Reason by Manfred Kuchn, West Lafayette/Indiana Ein jeder Glaube, selbst der historische, muß zwar vernünftig sein (denn der letzte Probierstein der Wahrheit ist immer die Vernunft); allein ein Vernunftglaube ist der, welcher sich auf keine andere Data gründet, als die, so in der reinen Vernunft enthalten sind. Immanuel Kant (Was heißt: Sich im Denken Orientieren?) Kant's actual argument for the postulate of God's existence in section V of the "Dialectic of Pure Practical Reason" - usually referred to äs his "moral argument for the existence of God* - fills not much more than one page of the text. It is, therefore, easily summarised. Kant argues that we must "postulate" the existence of God because: 1. We are commanded by the moral law to further the highest good. 2. What is thus commanded äs a duty must be possible. 3. The highest good is possible only if there can be happiness proportional to moral worth. 4. Happiness for rational beings is based upon the harmony of nature with the will of these rational beings. 5. There is not the slightest connection between our rational will and nature.
