Routledge, London and New York, 1999. xi + 285 pp. According to the editors, who are leaders of a controversial movement stemming originally from Anglo-Catholic circles in Cambridge, 'the logic of secularism is imploding'. This collection of essays thus represents an ambitious attempt to 'reclaim the world' theologically. Eschewing both Protestant biblicism and Tridentine authoritarianism, but embracing platonic, patristic and high-mediaeval forms of thought, the proponents of radical orthodoxy wish to deepen and extend the programme of the French nouvelle theologie by way of *a fully Christianised ontology and practical philosophy consonant with authentic Christian doctrine.' In doing so, they wish also to distinguish their work from Barthian neo-orthodoxy by refusing the latter's perceived Isolation from philosophy and culture. That is, they intend to be radical not only in their return to patristic roots, but especially in their reappropriation of 'the Augustinian vision of all knowledge äs divine Illumination -- a notion which transcends the modern bastard dualisms of faith and reason, grace and nature.'
