ERCL 2015; 11(4): 297298 In memoriam Jules Stuyck* DOI 10.1515/ercl-2015-0019 Walter van Gerven was one of the greatest lawyers of his generation. Born in 1935, sadly he passed away in the summer of 2015. Van Gerven was still very young when he started an academic career as a professor at the KU Leuven. He graduated in law in 1957. At that time he already had a degree in philosophy and one in economics. In 195960 van Gerven became a teaching fellow at the University of Chicago. Back in Leuven, he introduced the `case method' in legal education . In the meantime he had started publishing at an incredible pace landmark books on commercial law, European law, and legal theory. For generations of Belgian students van Gerven is the author of the Algemeen Deel (General Part) of the most prestigious legal series in Flanders Beginselen van Belgisch Privaatrecht (Principles of Belgian Private Law), which he founded with Roger Dillemans. Van Gerven was a very complete legal scholar with remarkable legal writing skills. Not surprisingly he was a very inspiring teacher and a Doktorvater (doctoral supervisor) of tens of Phd theses. He was a regular visiting professor in prestigious universities
