Through a series of meticulous analyses of individual texts, Ziegeler tries to identify intrinsic narrative properties that characterize four genres of late medieval German literature - the Minnerede, Dispel, Märe and Roman. The stress lies on "intrinsic" in this clause, for the book's originality resides in the author's determination to shun such matters as length, subject matter, secularity, characters and manuscript tradition in order to pursue immanent traits of narrative method peculiar to the Märe (and different traits peculiar to the other genres). This has not been done before with comparable intensity and scope. The author disposes over a wide range of analytical tools and perspectives.
