Euripides and the ‘Tales from Euripides’: Sources of the Fabulae of Ps.-Hyginus? Euripides and the Tales from Euripides': Sources of the Fabulae of Ps.-Hyginus? Marc Huys (Leuven) PARTI For the reconstruction of fragmentary tragedies scholars have often used mythographical sources, especially the Bibliotheke of Ps.-Apollodoros and the Fabulae of Ps.-Hyginus. Tolkiehn wrote in his Real-arucle on the latter author1: "Sein Hauptwert aber liegt für die Gegenwart darin, daß das Fabelbuch uns die Kenntnis einer großen Anzahl von Sagen vermittelt, die den griechischen Tragikern zum Vorwurf gedient haben, und uns somit instand setzt, uns eine ungefähre Vorstellung von dem Inhalte manches verlorenen Stückes zu machen", and in a paper of O. Abstract

Rossbach I found the following comment on the editio princeps by I. Micyllus2: "Dabei konnte der treffliche Gelehrte kaum ahnen, eine wie viel höhere Bedeutung sein Hygin für die Kenntnis der griechischen Dichter, in Sonderheit die verlorenen Dramen der attischen Tragiker, gewinnen würde." Even A. Nauck's "Tragicorum Graecorum Fragmenta" is interspersed with the fables of Hyginus3, and in more recent discussions of ancient literature or tragedy the same generalization has often been repeated4! However, the questions of authorship and date of the 'Fabulae1 have been hotly debated and are still unsolved5. This holds true also Tolkiehn, Mius Hyginus, RE X.l
