Was den Byzantinern auffallen mußte, war die Tatsache, daß Muhammed im Koran von Christus nicht nur im geschichtlichen, sondern auch im religiösen Sinne sprach, ohne allerdings die Gottessohnschaft anzuerkennen. Im Anschluß an die Stellen, die von Christus handeln, entwerfen die Byzantiner eine ausführliche Christologie des Koran. Einen Abriß bietet uns schon Johannes von Damaskus 1 ): ,,Er (Muhammed) sagt: Christus ist Wort Gottes und sein Geist, Geschöpf und Knecht, aus Maria, der Schwester des Mose und Ahron, ohne Samen geboren. Das Wort Gottes, sagt er, und der Geist ging in Maria ein und zeugte Jesus, der Prophet und Knecht Gottes war. Und die Juden, die wider das Gesetz handelten, wollten ihn kreuzigen und, als sie ihn ergriffen, kreuzigten sie seinen Schatten. Christus selbst, sagt er, wurde nicht gekreuzigt und starb auch nicht. Gott nahm ihn zu sich in den Himmel, weil er ihn liebte. Folgendes sagt er: als Christus in den Himmel stieg, fragte ihn Gott und sprach: o Jesus, hast du gesagt, ich bin Sohn Gottes und Gott ? Da antwortete Jesus: sei mir gnädig,
