BEHDIJA BOUMARAFI /. Definition First a good starting point is to clarify what is generally meant by curriculum development or "CD". A survey of the literature reveals that Professional writers do not agree on what is exactly meant by the term in order produce a tidy definition. Several meanings related to its use are suggested. This indicates that "CD" äs a subject of research in the field of library Information science is relatively new. Apparently the term "CD" did not find its way into the Professional literature until the 1970s. For instance the word "curriculum" appeared in LISA for the first time in 1973 and it is not until 1976 that an entry for "curriculum development" was made in the same Journal. However this does not mean that the term was unknown before the 1970s. For Lawal, O. (1983), traces the use of the word curriculum in England äs far back äs 1643 when it was used in Glasgow University. As an educational activity "CD" began to gain ground in the Professional literature which takes broader approach to the definition of the term to denote äs said elsewhere in the literature the totality of experience the students gained
