Kaarl Erik Rosengren, The Climate of Lititerature. Sweden's Literary Frame of Rdeference, 1953-1976, Studentlitteratuiir, Lund 1983, 278 S. Thhis book is part of a wide-spread research praogramme actually run in Sweden: under thae headline "cultural indicators" relevant asppects of socio-cultural development in this couuntry are to be analysed. The author of thhis volume - an academic teacher for mass coommunication at University of Gothenborg anod a prominent scholarly figure within the Wetestern media-research scene, too -- concenntrates on communicative aspects of the Swwedish literary system: Prof. Rosengren naames this field "the climate of literature" anad looks upon it as "literary frame of referenace". Moreover, as sketched in his pilotstuudy on moral values, the cultural climate anad book reviews (cf. "Sociological Aspects of : the Literary System"; Stockholm 1968), thee author again works out his elaborated quaantitative techniques of content analysis whhen measuring what he calls "the climate of I literature", surveying socio-demographic facctors, too. His basic concept is the wellknoown theory of gate-keeping, and in this pieece the author applies it on literary critique anad the book-reviewing process in Sweden froom the early fifties to the midst-seventies.
