Louis-Sebastien Merciers Tableau de Paris 2 signalisiert schon durch seinen Titel, daß die Literatur, will sie den Moloch Paris -- zumal in ihren überlieferten Gattungen -- erfassen, vor einer Herausforderung steht. Quaerens quem devoret trägt das Werk als Motto, und es scheint, als habe auch der Text selbst diesem Diktum nur knapp entgehen können. Während die editio princeps^ 1781 in Hamburg und Neufchätel erschienen, nur zwei Bände umfaßte, wächst das Tableau de Paris schließlich auf zwölf Bände an, wahrlich ein ,work in progress'3. Die klassizistische Ästhetik mit ihrem Glauben an die Geschlossenheit des Kunstwerks wird in Merciers gigantischem Paris-Tableau, dem Umbruchcharakter der Epoche entsprechend, erneut desavouiert. Für die Wahl des Titels gibt es in der gesamten früheren Paris-Literatur kein Vorbild4. Merciers Tableau de Paris stellt Nicht zuletzt aus diesem Grund ist die Forschungsliteratur zum Thema Großstadt besonders reichhaltig -- so umfangreich, daß sie hier nicht einmal annähernd aufgeführt werden kann.
