A Theological Anthropology of Evil: A Comparison in the Thought of Paul Ricœur and Teilhard de... A Theological Anthropology of Evil: A Comparison in the Thought of Paul Ricoeur and Teilhard de Chardin D. Dixon S u t h e r l a n d , Stetson University, DeLand, Florida, USA Both Teilhard de Chardin and Paul Ricoeur show deep concern for classical theology's struggle to Interpret evil. Each offers insight into how an adequate theological anthropology of evil might be formulated. Specifically, both deal with the questions of evil's origin, the relation between evil and human beings, and relief from evil. The Suggestion of this essay is that each philosopher-theologian grapples with these three crucial issues in ways that jointly provide useful parameters for constructing a theological anthropology of evil. A brief descriptive comparison of the widely different anthropological perspectives characteristic of Teilhard and Ricoeur will be given, the implications being explored for the way each thinker approaches the problem of evil. Following this, a comparative treatment of their respective philosophical and theological constructs revolving around these three issues will be offered. Lastly, the comparison will show that, notwithstanding fundamental differences that exist between Teilhard and Ricoeur, they come to many of the same conclusions about evil.
