GILL / ROME A close comparison of the life of St. Stephen the Younger by Symeon Metaphrastes ( s yet unedited, I think) with tbe original by Stephen the Deacon makes an interesting study, revealing, s it does, something of the technique of the "translator". It was not for nothing, indeed, that he was given the title of "metaphrastes", for, in this long life of 93 columns of Migne, the longest passage of the original that remains unchanged in the version consists of no more than 14 consecutive words, and the number of similar phrases that are found dotted up and down the later life is extremely small, not more, in fact, than a few dozen.
