GILL / ROME A close comparison of the life of St. Stephen the Younger by Symeon Metaphrastes ( s yet unedited, I think) with tbe original by Stephen the Deacon makes an interesting study, revealing, s it does, something of the technique of the "translator". It was not for nothing, indeed, that he was given the title of "metaphrastes", for, in this long life of 93 columns of Migne, the longest passage of the original that remains unchanged in the version consists of no more than 14 consecutive words, and the number of similar phrases that are found dotted up and down the later life is extremely small, not more, in fact, than a few dozen. In spite, however, of this passion for alteration, even where he leaves no word of bis model unchanged, Syrneon yet remains surprisingly faithful to it and, though bis general tendency is towards abbreviation, most apparent in bis short introduction and in bis cutting of a number of the discourses that the saint according to the earlier life addressed to bis monks, nevertheless, these few instances apart, so closely
