A Note on the Chronology of the Reign of the Emperor Heraclius.

A Note on the Chronology of the Reign of the Emperor Heraclius. Adolf J licher in a paper published in the Harnack Festgabe (T bingen, Mohr, 192l)1) has recently contended that the emperor Heraclius was present in Constantinople on January l 624 'during the preparations for the great war with Persia', and s a consequence maintains f so ist jeder Zweifel an der berlieferung des Chronicon Paschale, der zufolge Heraclius 624 und nicht schon 623 oder 622 den eigentlichen Perserkrieg begonnen hat -- eine Expedition gegen die Perser ist f r 622 damit nat rlich nicht ausgeschlossen -- aufgehoben'. For this contention J licher relies upon the doubtless contemporary accounts (1) (= Const. Porph. De Ceremoniis H. c. 28 Bonn pp. 628--629) and (11) , (ibid.
