Pp. x + 182. $ 23.90 paper.Steven Félix-Jäger’s With God on Our Side: Towards a Transformational Theology of Rock and Roll is an unapologetically Christian book that claims theological meanings and possibilities in music genres from folk rock to heavy metal and grunge. Félix-Jäger is not shy about stating where his allegiances lie, writing on the first page, “God made all humans and endowed us with the awesome ability to be creative.” A former Christian rock musician and youth pastor, Félix-Jäger makes the case that rock music can enrich Christian understanding and life experience and that his theology of rock is “faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the work of the kingdom of God on earth” (168). The ideal reader of this book needs to accept as a given that “God is Lord over all the earth” (169), that there is a something we can unproblematically call “Christian values,” and that the Hebrew Bible’s Book of Exodus is an example of Christ’s intervention in the world.
