Berlin/New York, De Gruyter 1986. XXXI, 246 p. Pr. DM 168.-. Aristophanes of Byzantium (Ar.) belongs to the famous trias of Alexandrian scholars, but what is his contribution to their fame? Opinions on his merits reached their zenith in Pfeiffer's Hist. of Class. Scholarship (1968, 173), who called him "the perfect scholar". Slater is much more sceptical on the possibility of "making an educated guess at the quality of Alexandrian scholarship" and does not "attempt here to give a comprehensive evaluation of Aristophanes in the Alexandrian tradition, for I think that is better kept for later reflection". (p. X). However, from his article on problems solving in the Museum (CQ 32 (1982), 336 and from many annotations to the fragments he appears to have a less favourable view than Pfeiffer had, but Blank and Dyck already undermined his position in their reply (ZPE 56 (1984), 17 ff.).
