From Moscow, as an addition to the Russian subset o f the 1-actually-lived-there genre, lacks the stylistic polish o f Hedrick Smith's classic The R u s s i a n s - and Smith's use o f scholarly literature to support and amplify his anecdotes. Nevertheless, O ' B r i e n ' s memoir is a very readable, responsible contribution to the picture o f h o w ordinary people in that part o f the world are living their post-Soviet daily lives.
