The interest of herpetologists in the biology of Mediterrancan Lacertidae has grown dramatically during the last decade, as may be seen not only by the high number of papers on such animals which have appeared in the scientific journals but also by the regular meetings and mini-symposia (housed in broader congresses) dealing with lacertid biology. This book is the proceedings volume of an international meeting on the biology of Mediterranean lacertids held in Lesvos (Greece) in April, 1992. Unlike most such proceedings volumes which are usually characterized by large numbers of short articles, this book contains several longer papers that relate to very diversified issues in lacertid biology. However, as seems to be the rule in books generated from congresses, the contents and the scientific standards are diverse, and while a few papers are of very general interest, several others suffer from too local an interest. Papers by E. N. Arnold (on lizard phylogeny reconstruction and its use in non-systematic areas of animal biology), Roger Avery (on lizard thermal biology) and Eric Pianka (on lizard ecology) are well-written, debate-stimulating, and especially meritorious of wide readership. The paper by Pianka, however, does not provide new information and suffers from a rather incomplete references list (many important recent articles by European lacertologists are not cited at all). Some well-written papers on adrenal gland morphology, chromosomes and immunocytochemistry of the pancreas are also provided. Many other papers (on ecology, diets and parasitology) provide original data, but the general interest of such papers in rather small. Moreover, we are not pleased to see that some of such studies (e.g. those on trophic ecology of lizards) are based on the killing of a dramatically high number of animals. We are surprised that other uncruene (e.g. faeces analysis) have been not applied. This is a serious ethical problem that deserves attention in the official journal of an organization (SEH) actively engaged in herpetological conservation. Also, papers on lizard morphology and zoogeography are present. A paper on this latter issue (by W. B6hme and C. Corti) is especially interesting for a broad readership, as its authors have tried to correlate the palaeogeographic events of the Mediterranean basin to the phylogeny of the west European lacertids. It is unfortunate that the soundness of the conclusions is difficult to assess, as the paper is contradictory and inconsistent at a few points. In general, the present book is a good proceedings volume but, in the opinion of these reviewers, it remains merely a proceedings volume despite the aim of the editors to provide an integrated up-to-date synthesis of the biology of the Mediterranean lacertids (see the Preface). In this respect the present book does not meet the goal of the editors. Recent herpetological volumes generated from international meetings have met this goal much more closely.
